Greetings from the Chair of the AOCMF International Board

Looking back, looking ahead

Goyo at the ARONJ Conference Munich

It was mid-July when I started chairing our international board and I am already approaching the six-month mark, culminating in the AO Foundation Davos Courses 2018. Time flies!

Highlights from the past six months include our brilliant participation in two major congresses: the International Federation of Head and Neck Oncological Societies (IFHNOS) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and the European Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (EACMFS) conference in Munich, Germany. At IFHNOS we organized two intracongress panels on “Osteoradionecrosis” and “Future prospects in CMF Reconstruction” respectively, both very well attended. At the EACMFS congress, we organized an intracongress symposium, "Pediatric Craniomaxillofacial Surgery", and two precongress activities: one workshop on orthognathic surgery and craniofacial deformities, for trainees, as well as our 2nd ARONJ R&D Conference, organized by the AOCMF Research and Development Commission. My congratulations to the chairs and faculties of these well-attended and positively evaluated educational events. Activities like these are particularly relevant as platforms for raising AOCMF’s visibility.

These events also offered AOCMF members and congress participants the opportunity to visit us, have a conversation, or simply relax at our booth. In Buenos Aires, we successfully initiated our Meet and Greet sessions as part of our strategy to offer more networking opportunities and access to our leading faculty. At our fantastic booth in Munich, we shared our time with visitors who had the chance to have coffee with us and take a look to the draft of the upcoming volume of the Advanced Craniomaxillofacial Surgery book with the editors available to answer questions. Science and academics are very important, but networking and socialization really matter to us: at both events, AOCMF hosted fantastic mixers for attending members.

Furthermore, I have started to working side by side with the respective regional boards and I am very happy to announce that we will maintain or even increase the number of course participants in 2019. At the same time, we have taken steps to raise the profile of women and young surgeons: our all-women’s dinner for female course participants at the Davos Courses 2018 is an example of our efforts to bring new blood into the organization. These are exciting times for AOCMF!

Last, but not least, as a growing, healthy organization, AOCMF definitely needs to start building momentum towards a global summit: Face Ahead, an innovative, unique experience focused on next-generation craniomaxillofacial (CMF) surgery takes place March 26–28, 2020 in Barcelona, Spain.
